ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT

Arts and Crafts was a late 19th-century movement to revive handicrafts. Arts and Crafts architecture sought a spiritual connection with the surrounding environment, both natural and manmade.

The Arts and Crafts movement was a British and American aesthetic movement occurring in the last years of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. Inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and a romantic idealization of the craftsman taking pride in his personal handiwork, it was at its height between approximately 1880 and 1910.

The Movement also influenced the whole field of architecture. Several sub-movements evolved, elements of which are included in our plans. The Craftsman style home evoked the charm of the bungalow with a more open concept than the small rooms of the Virtorian era.

The Prairie style, popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright, used low pitch roofs with wide overhangs which extended into the horizontal lines of the open prairie.

Other aspects of the Arts and Craft Movement show up with the use of solid wood elements in exterior doors and trim (as can be seen in our Tutor Style designs).

Interesting facts:

  • "The idea was to eliminate everything unnecessary. To make the whole as direct and simple as possible, but always with the beautiful in mind as the first goal..."
    Henry Greene, 1912

  • There were many architects who practiced their profession during the arts and crafts movement. Though not as well known as Frank Lloyd Wright or the Greene brothers John Constantine Hillman remained true to the roots of the movement.
